How Chiropractic Works

Downtown Chicago How Chiropractic Works When the bones (vertebrae) of the spine are not correctly aligned, it results in a condition known as subluxation. Nerve transmission is disrupted and causes pain in the back and neck, as well as other areas of the body. That’s where chiropractic treatment often comes in. In the simplest terms, it involves correcting the misalignment by performing an “adjustment.”

It is a misconception that a chiropractor “cracks” the bones in the spine during an adjustment. The sound sometimes made during treatment is not bones moving or cracking. Rather, it is the sound of pressure being released – a bit like when a champagne cork pops, except much quieter.

Chiropractic care can be an excellent option for certain problems associated with neck and back pain, as well as other conditions. It is also a viable alternative to surgery and drugs, without any of the side effects.

A doctor of Chiropractic (D.C) receives rigorous training that involves two years of medical school, followed by two more years focusing on the treatment and diagnosis of the musculoskeletal system. The chiropractors at American Back Center are further trained in sports medicine, giving them special expertise in treating sport-related injuries.

Anatomy of the Spine 1O1

Much of the body’s ability to heal itself and maintain health is based on the optimal functioning of the body’s musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.

The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates body activities. Nerves control all the functions in our body – from breathing and digestion to movement, circulation and touch. Scientific research supports the belief that disease can result from a lack of normal nerve function.

To understand how nerve function might be interrupted, it is important to consider the anatomy of your spine. The spine is made up of 24 vertebrae (bone and cartilage segments). Bending, twisting and general body movement is considered part of typical vertebral function. Sometimes, because of accidents, stress, poor posture or falls, these vertebrae shift or get jammed and the normal movement between them is lost. The nerves connected to the spine then become irritated. Once irritation occurs, the resulting pain and discomfort can interfere with the natural ability of the nervous system to keep the body healthy and pain free.

Benefits of Chiropractic

Pain relief is just one of the benefits of chiropractic treatment. Patients commonly report increased energy, better sleep patterns, and enhanced athletic performance – in short, a more optimal state of health and a greater ability to enjoy life.

The nervous system holds the key tothe body’s incredible potential to heal itself.”
